#AWM15: LAST POST (as in, my ostrich baby has almost hatched!)
It's almost the end of April, which means this is my last post for Lamplighter Magazine's awesome 2015 Artist Writer Mashup! Thank you to Patrick Boyle for coming up with this project, and for Lauren Clarke for lending us her amazing illustrations.
What did you ultimately produce?
A weird little poem in three parts, that plays around with my evolving relationship to the ostrich illustration I was assigned. At first, I thought I might simply describe the illustration in great detail, and let that speak for itself (sometimes description is enough, I think) but then the poem let me know that it had other things to say.
Do you feel that your work is finished or will you continue to edit and refine the work?
For the next week or so, I hope to do a bit more editing and refining. I want to make sure the poem remains mysterious, but I don't want it to be confusing. The idea is that the poem could stand alone, without the illustration and the project's constraints to explain its origins and purpose: I'm not sure the poem is there yet, though, and that's what I want to make sure of over the next few days.
How do you feel about the project overall?
I'm proud of myself for staying with it, and I really enjoyed the social media element of the whole thing. I'm also glad I challenged myself in writing this poem, that I let myself get uncomfortable, that I didn't simply play it safe. I can't wait to read what my comrades have produced, as well!
What was the best part of the project? What was the most difficult?
The best part was getting to know my ostrich buddy. The most difficult part was realizing that the ostrich, in fact, is me.
