POEM OF THE DAY: Muriel Rukeyser's "Islands"
“The fear of poetry is an indication that we are cut off from our own reality," Rukeyser said. And then she asked, “What would happen if one woman told the truth about her life? The world would split open.”
Yes. Poetry is that real.
ISLANDS
O for God's sake
they are connected
underneath
They look at each other
across the glittering sea
some keep a low profile
Some are cliffs
The bathers think
islands are separate like them
